Early today, the Ontario government ordered non-essential workplaces to close-down effective Tuesday, March 24th at 11:59pm. This measure was announced to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
When OREA learned the Province was considering a shutdown of non-essential businesses we launched a full court press with officials to ensure that REALTORS® were permitted to continue to support clients who required services to close on their transactions or families who needed to find housing.
I am happy to report that just an hour ago the Province announced the list of essential businesses which will be permitted to continue operating. It includes:
“Land registration services, and real estate agent services and moving services.”
So, what does this all mean?
Most importantly, it means that REALTORS®, following the advice of health officials, will be able to support families in this difficult time who need to close on a home.
But let’s be clear. This news is not a pass to carry on like it is business as usual.
The Province fully expects REALTORS® to use all the tools at their disposal to work with clients and close transactions remotely – adhering to all the advice from Public Health Officials.
That includes things like open houses, showings and maintaining regular office hours. If these services can be done remotely, the Province is expecting that they will.
