Two years ago, the world witnessed the senseless killing of George Floyd.
In response, millions of Americans and Canadians spoke out and took action to fight for what should be a basic human right and way of life for us all: equality.
As an association representing 92,000 REALTORS®, OREA had a responsibility to act in support of diversity, equity and inclusion in our profession and for the thousands of Ontarians our Members work with every day.
That’s why in June 2020, the OREA Board of Directors struck the Presidential Advisory Group (“PAG”) on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The goal of the PAG was to identify where systemic racism occurs in the real estate and housing sector and seek to change policy, perceptions and attitudes through education, advocacy, and research.
Twelve individuals from a range of lived experiences led this important work and we are proud to share with you today our final report, Fighting for Fair Housing www.orea.com/News-and-Events/FairHousingReport.
Fighting for Fair Housing dives deeply into diversity, equity, and inclusion in Ontario’s current real estate market. It includes extensive research and consultation with Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) and members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
Most importantly, Fighting for Fair Housing proposes 19 recommendations on improving diversity, equity, and inclusion when it comes to public policy, the real estate sector and OREA itself. These recommendations have been accepted by the OREA Board of Directors and will make their way into our 2023 Operational Plan.
Our DEI report is only a first step in advancing equity both within our organization and industry, and will continue to be a priority for OREA and our Members.
